We wanted to ensure that you are well informed about the upcoming solar eclipse scheduled for Monday, April 8, 2024. A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, casting a shadow on the earth's surface. We are both excited about the chance to witness this rare astronomical event and committed to ensuring the safety of students who will still be at school during this time. In Sacramento, the eclipse is expected to begin at 10:16 am and conclude around 12:18 pm, with its peak occurring at 11:15 am when the sun will be partially obscured by the moon.
Safety for students during the solar eclipses Ensuring the safety of our students during the solar eclipse is critical. While students may be outdoors for various school activities such as class changes, recess, or physical education, it is imperative that they understand and adhere to safety protocols. We kindly request that parents review safety procedures with their children, emphasizing never to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. On the day of the eclipse, our teachers and staff will closely monitor students and remind them of the importance of protecting their eyes.
Solar Eclipse Eye Safety Facts and Information (How to Safely View the Solar Eclipse)
Looking directly at the Sun without proper eye protection is unsafe. It is ONLY safe to look directly at the Sun through special solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses,” that comply with the transmittance requirements of the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun.
