October Harvest of the Month

This month's Harvest of the Month is TOMATOES!  Our students had the opportunity to learn about the Harvest of the Month, and then they got to try some cherry tomatoes--check out their reactions in the video!  Did you know that California produces 95% of the tomatoes in the U.S.?
Here are some other fun facts about tomatoes:
  • Improve vision: Tomatoes contain Vitamin A, which can improve vision, prevent night blindness, and may help reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
  • Strong bones: Wait, what?  Yes, tomatoes contain Vitamin K, lycopene, AND calcium, which strengthen and repair bones ,and improve bone mass.
  • Healthy skin: The beta carotene and lycopene found in tomatoes help make skin less sensitive to sun damage.

Harvest of the Month is an educational program that highlights a different California-grown product each month of the school year and cultivates a healthy food and farm connection by increasing students' exposure to seasonal foods while also supporting local farmers. Student taste tests are done each month in the cafeteria and teachers share educational information such as the nutrients, history, and recipes.
